The Michigan Gaming Control Board Has Designated 1-800-GAMBLER as the State’s Hotline for Problem Gambling
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is happy to announce that 1-800-GAMBLER will now be the state’s main hotline for problem gamblers with the goal of streamlining help to those who need it. The National Problem Gambling hotline (1-800-GAMBLER), run by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), is the biggest problem gambling hotline network in the world in terms of call volume, population served, and geographic region covered. The hotline links individuals and families affected by problem gambling with resources, expert assistance, and local referrals.
By August 8, 2024, Michigan online gambling operators will have to update any published hotline numbers and include the 1-800-GAMBLER number in their messaging on responsible gaming.
From anywhere in the United States, 1-800-GAMBLER provides a single, convenient entry point to neighborhood programs and assistance with problem gambling. MGCB’s adoption of the number for use in Michigan makes it one step closer to unifying the several state-level gambling helplines into a single, memorable number for problem gambling.
Henry Williams, executive director of MGCB, said that the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network links people with gambling addiction to qualified experts who provide private support and services. The MGCB reaffirms its commitment to providing a safe and secure gaming environment for players across the state by designating 1-800-GAMBLER as the statewide problem gambling hotline. This ensures that services for treatment and recovery may be accessed promptly and conveniently.
The Michigan Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-270-7117) will be replaced with 1-800-GAMBLER, however, the former number will continue to be in use. Michigan residents who call 1-800-GAMBLER will speak with the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS). Additionally, you may text 800GAM to the hotline or use 1800gamblerchat.org to chat online. Contact center representatives with extensive training are on hand around the clock, 365 days a year to provide assistance, direction, and pertinent information to anybody looking for help with problem gambling.
